Help Us HELP THEM

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

The success, even the simple functioning as an organization, of Bobbi and the Strays would not be possible without the dedication, time, strength, and support of our volunteers.  Volunteers are our core – those that directly help us to help them.  “Them” being the thousands of dogs and cats that have come into our care and who have been placed in loving homes because of it.

We have multiple locations.  Two Adoption Centers – one in Glendale, Queens – the other in Freeport, Long Island.  We also have two locations that shelter our animals but are closed to the public – one near JFK airport and the other in Long Island City, Queens.

You can even volunteer at off-site locations mostly in Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island, and Manhattan – for our Adoption or Fundraising Events, or even things like our Humane Education program or “Hiking with the Hounds”.

Wednesday’s Story

Bobbi and the Strays got an email from a woman in the Bronx asking us to help with her female pit bull that she could no longer keep due to landlord issues. She was hiding the dog named Wednesday in her bathroom in her apartment for fear of being kicked out. Wednesday was a beautiful unaltered female pit bull. We feared what would happen to Wednesday if we didn’t step in to help. Many people want pits like her to breed and sell puppies or to fight. A lot of them end up abused, abandoned or euthanized at our city shelters.

One warm May morning, I drove up to the Bronx, dragging two friends a long with me for the ride  to pick up this pit bull named Wednesday.  We found the building without too much trouble and the girl met us outside with a large tannish/red and white pit bull that was being walked with a pocket book string- no collar, no leash.

Wednesday looked healthy. She was a good weight. She had a huge block head and I could tell she had puppies already in the past. The young girl was crying when she gave me Wednesday. She said she had no choice. Her landlord was forcing her and she didn’t want to put Wednesday on the street. She feared what would happen to her there. She said she would rather have Wednesday euthanized. There wasn’t much I could say.  Both things were horrible to me.  Wednesday hopped right into the back seat of my car. I sat in the back with her and one of my friends drove. Wednesday looked longingly out the back window as we drove away.

Wednesday at an adoption event

When we got to the shelter we brought Wednesday inside. She looked unsure and scared.  Even though we were saving her life, I always feel sad leaving at them at the shelter.  They may feel like we are abandoning them. But then they learn that we come back everyday to take care of them and they start to feel comfortable.

After we took Wednesday to the vet and had her spayed we enrolled in obedience classes at Pawsative Dog Training.  We saw this dog had a lot of potential. She was smart and attentive, eager to please her people.  I had a feeling she could earn her Canine Good Citizenship Certificate which would help her get adopted and help dispel any notions that she was an aggressive dog just because she was a pit bull.  One of our dedicated volunteers started to bring her to beginners classes.  She passed basics with flying colors after eight weeks and then was enrolled in the CGC class.

Diane took her to classes once a week and then came to the shelter in between to practice with Wednesday.  When she passed her Canine Good Citizenship test we were all ecstatic, though not surprised.  Wednesday had such a fabulous temperament and Diane was devoted to helping Wednesday reach her potential.

Not long after she earned her CGC, Wednesday was selected to appear in a runway show at Pet Fashion Week in Manhattan. Several other Pawsative graduates were also going to be models!  Wednesday was a super star! She did a wonderful job at representing her breed and representing shelter dogs!

Wednesday was adopted soon after by a new volunteer who fell in love with her.  She now lives in a home in Queens.  She has retired from modeling and is content to spend her days being the faithful companion to her person.

When I think about Wednesday’s story, it amazes me.  Here is this dog that was locked up inside a bathroom in the beginning of her life, being bred and having her puppies sold and then almost being homeless on the street or taken to be euthanized.  Then the next thing we know she is an AKC Canine Good Citizen and runway model!  Never underestimate the potential of a shelter dogs. Many of them are just like Wednesday, waiting for someone to recognize their potential.

Walk 4 Paws was a Success!

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Watching the stream of dogs and people walk up the road through Forest Park made me teary eyed. Not even some rainy weather could stop over 250 people from coming out on a Saturday morning to help raise money and awareness for the animals of Bobbi and the Strays. Through the tears (happy tears!) I had to smile as dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages walked together and with their owners in harmony for a common cause. It was a beautiful sight!

We had been planning the 1st annual Walk 4 Paws for many months. Last year we had received word that the building where we house our larger dogs will soon no longer be available to us and we would eventually have to find a new shelter for the dogs we housed there. Unfortunately we were lacking the funds! Our solution? The Walk 4 Paws!

After many months of planning with many people contributing, it was amazing to see it all come together on the morning of May 2nd. The trails of Forest Park were beautiful and the walk was very peaceful. We had some of our own shelter animals come out to participate as well. After the walk, there was live entertainment, raffles, face painting, microchipping, goody bags and other give-a-ways. Also Pawsative Dog Training entertained us by hosting doggie games such as Bobbing for Biscuits!

Thanks to everyone who participated and donated to the Walk 4 Paws, we were able to raise over $30,000!!!! This is incredible and we can’t thank everyone enough! This was truly a community effort and it goes to show what wonderful things can happen when we work together. THANK YOU! This money is a huge contribution to the building fund and brings us one step closer in establishing a permenant no-kill shelter in Queens. This is Bobbi’s dream!

I’d like to give a special thanks to our sponsors: The Petco Foundation, Choice Environmental, Steve Madden, Cloudstar, TD Bank, and Dogswell. Also would like to give a special thank you to everyone who came out and volunteered on the day of the walk. A big, special thank you goes out to Carla and Ronnie for all their hard work, dedication and perserverance in making this walk happen.

We are already looking forward to the 2nd Walk 4 Paws next Spring. We hope to see you there!

Thanks for attending our Pasta Party!

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

On Thursday, March 19th we had a Pasta Party Fundraiser at Carosello.  It was a great night had by all with some great food and some wonderful donated items that were raffled off in the chinese auction.

I would like to thank everyone who attended the pasta party. We had tons of fun as always and the positive energy in the room was perfect! We were able to raise about $3,400 for the “kids” which helps us to continue our work saving them and finding their forever homes.

We would also like to thank a few people for their ongoing generosity:

Josephine Peri – our wrapper extraordinaire! We could never do this party and have such a beautiful chinese auction without the talent of Josephine. Thanks Jo!

Midge Burton – “on the job Midge” as we like to call her was on it as usual!!! The party would not have run as smoothly without you so thanks Margie!

Susan and Kristiana St. John – for their support and great people skills while working the door and selling the raffles respectively. Your dedication is the best – thanks girls!

Nicky at Carosello – you were THE best – thank you for helping the way you did to make the night go really smoothly.

Loredana Sherman – my friend and co-worker – thank you for winning the 50/50 and donating it back to the kids. Your care and concern for the cats and dogs and our mission shined through – thanks LD!!

Last but not least we would like to thank all the people who donated raffle gifts to the party – you really saved the day and made the party special.

Thank you to all who attended and helped!

Be sure to check our website – www.BobbiAndTheStrays.org for our upcoming events. We hope to see you at the next event!

Love and head butts,
Sandy =)
